Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
