The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
